Why Are There Two Outlets on the Sidewall of the Whirlpool Tun?

After the whirlpool process, the wort needs to be transferred out of the whirlpool tun while keeping as much trub and sediment as possible inside the tank. This is why a whirlpool tun is generally designed with two wort outlets on the sidewall at different heights.

The two outlets are typically positioned at approximately 1/2 of the wort height and 1/10 of the tank height from the bottom. During wort transfer, the outlets are opened from top to bottom in sequence.

Why Are Two Wort Outlets Needed?

During the whirlpool process, the hot trub and other solids are concentrated toward the center and bottom of the tank, while the clearer wort remains above the sediment layer.

Generally, the wort in the upper part of the whirlpool tun is the clearest. As the liquid level decreases, the wort closer to the bottom gradually contains more solids and may become increasingly cloudy.

Therefore, the two outlets allow the brewer to transfer the clearer wort first and then use the lower outlet as the wort level drops.

When operating the outlets, the valve should be opened gradually while monitoring the wort flow. If the flow rate is too high, it may disturb the sediment and cause more trub to enter the wort, resulting in cloudy wort.

This simple two-outlet design provides greater flexibility during wort transfer and helps the brewer achieve better wort clarity while minimizing the carryover of sediment.
