What Is A Beer Filter Press

Introduction

Wort filtration is a critical step in mashing that determines raw material utilization and production efficiency. The beer filter press with airbag squeezing is a popular piece of equipment for modern craft breweries and large-scale breweries to boost production capacity and extraction rate. Its filtration principle is completely different from that of the traditional lauter tun.

What is a beer filter press

A brewery-specific filter press mainly consists of filter plates, squeezing diaphragms, filter cloths, pressing mechanisms and piping systems. The mash is pumped into filter chambers for preliminary wort separation under feeding pressure. Once feeding is finished, compressed air is fed into the diaphragms. The airbags expand evenly and apply gentle squeezing pressure on the spent grain cake inside the chambers. This squeezes out residual wort and sugar trapped between grain particles. Cake washing follows afterward, and the plates are opened for grain discharge after pressure relief.

Unlike ordinary plate-and-frame filter presses, the squeezing force comes from the inflated diaphragms instead of relying only on the feeding pump. This delivers more uniform pressure distribution.

Core advantages of diaphragm squeezing

First, it achieves a higher extraction rate and cuts malt costs. The airbags squeeze the spent grain much drier, greatly reducing leftover fermentable sugar in the grains. More wort can be produced from the same amount of malt, lowering raw material waste over long production runs.

Second, it is forgiving on malt milling. A lauter tun relies heavily on intact malt husks to form the filter bed; broken husks easily lead to cloudy wort and slow filtration. The filter press does not have this limitation. Malt can be milled finer while maintaining stable filtration, offering greater process tolerance.

Third, filtration is fast to support repeated daily brewhouse runs. The full cycle of filtration, squeezing and sparging takes little time. It works well for breweries running multiple mashing batches every day, suitable for stable mass production of lager and regular commercial beer to fulfill large orders.

Fourth, it saves floor space. Compared with a lauter tun of the same processing capacity, the filter press has a smaller footprint. It is easier to install in breweries with limited workshop area or low ceiling height.

Points to note in operation

Filter cloths are consumables. They must be rinsed after every batch and replaced regularly once clogged or torn, bringing ongoing material costs. Diaphragm airbags are also wearing parts that require inspection and replacement after repeated inflation cycles.

Strict hygiene management is required. Filter plates, filter cloths and gaps must be thoroughly cleaned after each run. Residual wort left behind can cause bacterial growth and spoil wort quality. Operation is more complicated than running a lauter tun. Operators need to master parameters such as inflation pressure, squeezing duration and sparging flow. Improper settings may raise the risk of wort oxidation and hurt beer aroma.

Ideal breweries for this equipment

It suits breweries with frequent mashing batches that pursue high extraction rates and better malt cost control. It is a great fit for lager and standard beer production, where dedicated staff are available for cleaning and maintenance and the brewery can budget for regular filter cloth and diaphragm replacement.

Breweries focusing on ale, fruity craft beer, prioritizing mild flavor and low oxidation, with fewer daily batches and the desire for simple, low-maintenance operation, will be better served by a lauter tun.

Résumé

The beer filter press is a filtration solution focused on production efficiency and raw material yield. It is not designed to replace the lauter tun, but provides brewers with an alternative option. Tiantai supplies complete filter presses matched with brewhouse systems to fit brewery lines of different capacities.
